Polestar dips its pole into the SUV segment with its first SUV, the Polestar 3
Gothenburg, Sweden – 07 June 2022 - Volvo’s electric and eccentric offshoot, Polestar has announced its next car, the Polestar 3. Unlike the Polestar 2, which was a jacked-up fastback-ish, the Polestar 3 will be a performance electric SUV. The world premiere of the Swedish brand’s first SUV will be around the corner, in October of 2022.
“Polestar 3 is the SUV for the electric age. Our design identity evolves with this high-end large luxury EV, with a strong, individual brand character,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO. “With this car, we bring the ‘sport’ back to the SUV, staying true to our performance roots.”
Thomas Ingenlath adds: “This is a major milestone for our company, one that boosts our growth trajectory and takes us into our next phase.”
The Polestar 3, which is about the same size as the Porsche Cayenne, will come with an autonomous highway piloting suite at a later phase. The Swedish EV brand claims that the SUV will have a best-in-class LiDAR sensor from Luminar, run by a centralised NVIDIA processor. The first variant will be powered by a dual-motor setup, with a battery capable of over 600km. Manufacture of the Polestar 3 will begin in early 2023, in the United States and China.
According to our sources, Polestar plans to introduce a new car to their lineup every year, for the next three years, and have ambitions to increase their presence to at least thirty global markets by next year.
So while all we have for now is this picture, we also know what else is baking in their oven.
The Polestar 4, a smaller performance electric SUV coupe, will follow in 2023.
2024 will see the introduction of the Polestar 5 electric performance 4-door GT (interestingly with no B-pillars). This is an evolution of the Precept, which was teased back in early 2020.
