Finally! Volkswagen Golf now Category A COE-friendly

Singapore - Fans of the Mk.8 Volkswagen Golf can now rejoice, as Wolfsburg’s favourite hatchback is now Category A-friendly. The different COE categorisation means that the 129hp VW Golf now starts from $169,900* (with COE).

The newly announced Mk. 8 Golf produces 129hp and 200Nm, down from 150hp and 250Nm, the latter which is this hatchback in the bold blue text. The 129hp Golf, which is paired with a 7-speed DSG, reaches 100km/h in 9.4 seconds, and tops out at 213km/h. With the help of the 48V Mild Hybrid system (which also offers a small electric boost), coasting, engine “sleep” (even while coasting) and Cylinder Deactivation tech - combined fuel economy is rated at an impressive 20.9 km/l.

For those who are hoping to milk some (GTI-inspired) handling out of the car, you would need to manage your expectations, as the 129hp car is equipped with a rear torsion beam suspension, as opposed to the independent rear found on the 150hp car.

Other than the “beneficial” drop in power, buyers can expect most of the same stuff found in the 150hp car. The “new” Golf begins with the Life version, which is equipped with 17-inch rims, welcome lights, and adjustable 10 colour ambient lighting. It supports wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while a 10.25-inch high-resolution Digital Cockpit comes as standard. All Golf models are equipped with wireless smartphone charging pads.

One step above the Life version, the Life Plus Golf 8 gets uprated LED headlights, LED lights with dynamic turn indicators at the rear, 30 colour choices of ambient lighting, and 18-inch rims.

The R-Line at the top of the 129hp Golf range, benefits from a sports suspension, 18-inch rims, sport front seats, and a leather-wrapped multi-function ‘R-line’ steering wheel. The infotainment system also boasts wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Some of the standard safety features include the all-important Rear traffic alert, a valuable feature while reversing. There is also side assist, for checking blind spots during lane changes.
