2022 Mini Electric Resolute Edition : Zippy Zappy Resolutely

Singapore - The MINI 3 Door Electric, is the first EV for the storied British brand. Having been around for around 3 years, MINI has left its magic touch on their first electric car, by including it as one of four special edition models. 

Also, the Rebel Geen paint treatment, which is usually reserved for the John Cooper Works cars, paired with the “Resolute Edition” treatment, is also available on the 3 door and 5 door Cooper S cars. Not overlooking little details, MINI has also added 'Resolute Bronze’ accents to the side scuttles and tailgate, while the hood gets gold racings stripes.

Kick-in the throttle from a standstill, and you will find instantaneous acceleration here, including some wheel chirps, as the electric motor delivers instant torque. Slip the small 3-door hatch into a bend, and MINI’s signature go-kart handling begins to reveal itself; all this with the fun of a weighted steering. 

For those who feel that a small city car is all that is needed for their day-to-day drive, the 32.6kWh battery translates to between 235-270km of range, which is comparable to the Mazda MX-30 EV.

Over on the inside, the 3 door’s interior space is best described as “good for 2, a squeeze for more”. Rear legroom is sufficient for 2 adults, only if you are doing short drives to lunch from the office. The now-familiar revised dashboard features the largest screen which could fit in an illuminated bezel, and the instrument gauge cluster also receives a digital display. However, there are a few details which I feel that MINI did not factor in. Especially, about the part where there is no wireless compatibility for Android devices. Curiously, MINI had also not thought-out a wireless charging space, large enough for current-day mobile devices.

Amazingly, for the car’s small footprint, the rather tiny 211 litre boot is rather well thought-out. Roll the rear seat backs forward, and the 3-door hatch is able to accommodate up to 731 litres of flat-loading cargo space; while the boot board is also collapsible, to allow for taller items.

Just as MINI celebrates this last hurrah, there is talk that we will see the next fourth-gen 3 and 5-door soon. 

Engaging to drive, stylish and iconic, the current MINI range still feels fresh. And if you are thinking of making a switch to an electric car, the MINI Electric offers heaps of driving fun, in a small package. Nevermind the small rear leg space.
