Toyota's latest Camry Hybrid arrives in Singapore

Singapore - The quintessential big sedan from Toyota is back in Singapore. Though this time, it only comes as a hybrid model. The new Toyota Camry Hybrid is being offered in two trim variants, a Standard model (S$132,888 at the time of writing) and a higher-spec Elegance model (S$148,888 at the time of writing).

Built atop Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA GA-K) platform, the Camry Hybrid models are powered by a 2.5-litre four-pot from Toyota’s range of Dynamic Force engines, just like in the Harrier Hybrid that arrived earlier this year. The power output of the Camry is rather similar to that of the Harrier, with a combined total output of 207hp from both the inline-4 engine and electric motors. Power is routed through Toyota’s e-CVT gearbox for a claimed 0-100km/h time of 8.5 seconds.

Visually, both Camry models share similar side profiles, the same LED headlamps/DRLs, identical wheelbases and dimensions. In the standard trim model, the front fascia is more elegantly styled, with chrome lashings and horizontal grille slats that span across the entire lower front bumper. In the rather strangely named “Elegance”, the styling cues have been totally revised, with angular creases that give the Camry a much more aggressive presence on the road. The Elegance model gets revised front and rear bumpers with dual exhaust pipes out back, and 18-inch rims instead of 17s on the standard model.

Inside, the Elegance model gets treated to better luxuries fittings as well. Ventilated front seats, power tilting and telescoping steering column, a heads up display, blind-spot monitors, and leather all around. Both Standard and Elegance models do get Toyota’s full suite of safety systems, including Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing and Lane Departure Alerts, Automatic High beams, and Pre-Collision Systems. All part of the Toyota Safety Sense system.

The arrival of the Camry Hybrid marks a rather significant shift in the mid-sized luxury car segment. With ample power and its rated fuel consumption of just 4.4L/100km, all at a price point that won’t leave a massive dent in your wallet.
