The Mercedes-AMG C43 now has over 400bhp
This might not be the first time you’ve read a headline in that vein: back in 2018 the Mercedes-AMG C43 was the beneficiary of a 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine generating a hefty 385bhp.
But that was four years ago, today’s demands are very different. Say hello to 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo power; cleaner and more planet-friendly than before, but still delivering the extra shove that buyers demand.
How much oomph are we talking? Well, 402bhp and 369lb ft of torque, the former available at 6,750rpm and the latter at 5,000rpm. However, AMG also says it can squeeze another 14bhp from the starter-generator ‘in certain driving situations’.
This is fed by a 48-volt system that also operates the turbocharger. You guessed it, the AMG C43 is officially a mild-hybrid.
In the C43 saloon that all means 0-62mph in 4.6secs, while the estate is a fraction slower at 4.7secs. Top speed for both variants is limited to 155mph, although you can boost this to 165mph if you wish by equipping AMG Driver’s Package. Those Autobahns won’t devour themselves, after all.
All-wheel drive is a permanent feature, with 31 per cent of the torque cent to the front wheels and the rest to the back, where rear-axle steering is also present. Adaptive damping is included, with power transmitted through a nine-speed auto ‘box.
Merc says that 18-inch alloys are standard, but you’ve got the option of 19s or 20s if you prefer. The interior is kitted out with AMG seats clad in a black, synthetic microfiber material with red contrast stitching, but again you can upgrade this to leather or nappa leather depending on your budget.
Prices haven’t been announced yet, but Merc reckons the first cars will land in the UK in September. Thoughts on a 400bhp+ C43, folks?
