Sepang Circuit, Malaysia - Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4Matic+ 4-door Coupe. A long name befitting the additional (two) doors. 4.0-litres, V8 biturbo, 639bhp, 900Nm, 0-100km/h in 3.2secs and a top speed of 315km/h. Headlines that will raise the pulse of any petrolhead.

More than competent on the race track, the GT 63 S 4Matic+ 4-door coupe clocked a record lap-time of 7:25:41 at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife, making it the fastest four-seater production car.

Apt then, that AMG chose Turn 15 at Sepang International Circuit to unveil (literally) the car in a cloud of doughnut-induced tyre smoke. Of all the GT 4-door variants, only the GT 63 S and GT 53 will be available in Singapore.

The GT series sits atop the AMG family and complements its two-door two-seater sportcars. Mark Raine, VP Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, says, "The GT 4-door merges the four-door coupe and two-door GT - business limousine merged with Gran Turismo."

"While the CLS 53/ 63 customer is someone looking for more power (and performance) from a four-door coupe, the GT 4-door customer is a customer looking for a practical sportscar. After all, the GT 4-door is a proper racecar you can use on the track," he adds.

The GT 4-door’s silhouette and sportback styling is reminiscent of the Porsche Panamera, or even the Audi RS 7. However, the closest rival Panameras are the Turbo S E-Hybrid (680hp, V8 biturbo, 3.4s, 310km/h) and Panamera Turbo (550hp, V8 biturbo, 3.9s, 306km/h). For more conventional palates, there’s always the BMW M5 (617hp, V8 biturbo, 3.1s, 310km/h) or even a three-pointed star stablemate, the E 63 S.

Styled with Mercedes-AMG’s design philosophy of sensual purity and striking proportions, the GT 4-door looks menacing presented in Designo Graphite Grey Magno. It is long and low-slung, with a steeply raked windscreen and sloped rear windscreen (or aeroback as some call it).

We’d personally spec the car with the optional retro-look 21-inch AMG Schmiederäder im 5-Loch-Design (AMG forged wheels in five-hole design), reminiscent of AMG’s classic'Monobloc’ rims seen on the W202 C 36 AMG - they’re a nice departure from the typical multispoke rims, and certainly much easier to clean!

This top-of-line model features the AMG Performance exterior packages (Aerodynamics, Exterior Night and Exterior Carbon Fiber), complete with jet-wing designed front end complete with front splitter, fixed rear spoiler and demand-optimised diffuser out back.

Inside, the yellow-contrast stitched AMG Performance nappa-clad leather seats and Dinamica microfibre steering wheel adds to the aura of sportiness. At the rear, two non-folding bucket seats with carbonfibre-reinforced-plastic seat-backs adds practicality, but also reinforces its racecar intentions.

The features emphasise its racecar pedigree, and distances itself from its E-Class sedan-based MRA longitudinal-engine, rear-wheel-drive underpinnings. Parked next to the stable of AMGs present (including the E and CLS), the GT 4-door looked every bit the GT-racer.
