TGS talks to Henry Ang about the BMW M3 Competition Touring : The Ultimate Everyday Superhero

Singapore - We believe that everyone has a hero, but we also know that not every hero may be worth the meet.

But big BMW fan, Henry Ang, has not only found his, but he also owns it - a BMW M3 Competition Touring.

BMW may have first teased the concept of a Touring version of the M3 in 2000, but the idea of an M-badged estate car was actually mulled almost a decade prior.

It came in the form of the E34 M5 Touring (and then the V10-engined E61 M5 Touring).

This combined the allure of high-performance motoring with a huge dose of practicality.  

So, here is a little back story. When the G80 M3 was launched in 2019, the then boss of BMW Singapore, Mr. Christopher Wehner mentioned to the motoring press that he would consider importing a limited batch of estates… that is, if we could guarantee him a convincing number of takers. 

Henry was one of these takers, whom we met over dinner with the BMW M Club a while ago. 

In the midst of the flurry of festivities, we caught up with the BMW aficionado, who was happy to show us an example parked outside of the event area.

Henry mentioned that before finally setting his eyes on the new M3 Touring, he went through a long-drawn process of doing his own research, even approaching international BMW M communities, before making his decision.

About why he was sold on the M3 Touring, Henry mentioned that he was won-over by the engineering behind the 3D printed cylinder head; as it had embedded coolant channels within its structure for improved heat management and weight savings.

The larger cargo room also fits perfectly into his lifestyle, since he cycles and would use the trunk to transport his bike.

Henry also noted that another reason why he was drawn to the first M3 Touring, is that it is the fastest estate ever around Nürburgring ever, completing a lap in a blistering-quick 7m 35.060s.

The M3 estate might be quick, but what is important to Henry too, is a safe handling car, so the xDrive AWD system he stressed, is a very important box checked.

For him, the M3 Touring is a car which does everything, which is why he fittingly dubbed it his “Superhero car”.
