Cafes in Singapore for a quick grab n' go

By topgearsingapore, 16 June 2021

We drivers are always on the move, meandering through the seemingly endless network of highways, tunnels and slip roads. Shuttling from point A to point B, making literal cross-country journeys from one end of the island to the other. Every so often, we'll make pit stops at petrol kiosks, convenience stores, even coffeeshops tucked within housing estates.

For some of us, such moments of solace are but a brief respite from the dreariness of being behind a wheel for extended periods of time. We yearn for it, and at times, we so desperately need something to abate the drowsiness we feel. So, to combat the fatigue of non-stop driving, here a few cafes for a quick little pick-me-up or a mid-afternoon caffeine boost.

Five Oars Coffee Roasters

6 Upper East Coast Road, Singapore 455200

Step into this cafe, and you’d be greeted by the wafting smells of coffee beans or the scent of pastries. Located on the ground floor of an apartment building, the interior decor of FOCR is styled to emulate the rustic look and feel of a Melburnian cafe (having spent several years in Melbourne, I can confirm this). The nearest carpark is a minute’s walk away so you could grab yourself a hot brew and be back in your car before the 10-minute grace period expires.

Dempsey Hill

This might not be a cafe, per se, but the Dempsey Hill vicinity is home to many eateries and coffeehouses that should serve to perk you up for an extended drive ahead. Matter of fact, I made a quick pit stop in the area for the very same reason. The best part of Dempsey: parking is free of charge.

Apollo Coffee Bar

65 Serangoon Garden Way, Singapore 555961

Located right in the heart of the Serangoon Gardens neighbourhood is Apollo Coffee Bar. Serving up a bevvy of caffeinated drinks, assorted mains and all-day breakfast meals, this cafe serves as an ideal pit-stop for the weary driver with one too many hours spent on the road. If you're lucky, you could snag a spot right in front of the cafe itself.

Any McDonald's Drive-Through

Despite what some caffeine aficionados may have you believe, you can get a decent cup of coffee from McDonald's. Pop by your nearest Macca's drive-thru outlet and get yourself a nice hot (or cold) cup of joe and be on your way. As an added bonus, you don't even have to set foot out of your car, which bodes well for social distancing measures in these trying times.
